Colombia boost World Cup last-16 hopes by eliminating Poland

FIFA World Cup 2018: FPJ's dream XI predictions for Poland and Colombia

Radamel Falcao scored his first World Cup goal as Colombia got their tournament in Russian Federation up and running with an impressive 3-0 victory that ended a lacklustre Poland side's hopes of reaching the last 16.

Poland had a spell early of dominance early in the second half but, when Falcao latched onto a Quintero through ball to put Colombia 2-0 up in the 70th minute, the game was effectively over.

The 22-year-old enjoyed his first taste of World Cup action on Monday as he impressed after coming on as an 80th minute substitute in the 2-1 victory over Tunisia.

Three was the least Colombia deserved, with their dominance leaving Poland looking little more than mesmerised spectators for the majority of the fixture.

Poland and Colombia came into Sunday's game in the knowledge that Japan and Senegal had earlier drawn 2-2 in Ekaterinburg.

Uruguay v Saudi Arabia 20 June 2018
Uruguay made it two wins in successive World Cup games, defeating Saudi Arabia via a sole goal from Luis Suarez . But they were outmatched by the Uruguayan defence and were under regular threat from Suarez and Cavani.

Colombia gave themselves a fighting chance of reaching the next round of the 2018 World Cup courtesy of a commanding 3-0 victory over Poland in Group H at the Kazan Arena this evening.

"The only thing I can say is that we hope to have a complete game on Sunday, Colombia need to win to stay alive", he told reporters. "But we treat Colombia as a whole team, even if they have such a great player". Let's be frank, it's not like we lost by a whisker.

Only the bravery of goalkeeper David Ospina saved Colombia from conceding what looked like the equaliser when he rushed out to block from Lewandowski after the Bayern Munich striker did well to get a shot away from a long ball from midfield.

Poland continued to push forward and five minutes later they were caught on the break when Rodriguez rasped a pass across the field to set Cuadrado free on goal and allow the winger to claim fitting reward for a fine performance with a cool finish.

The disappointing Poland became the first European side eliminated from the tournament and the normally prolific Lewandowski failed to fire again, but coach Adam Nawalka was stoic in defeat. "I am very sorry and very sad that we lost but tomorrow is another day".

- Despite failing to score against Senegal in Poland's opening match, Lewandowski has netted 21 goals in his last 16 appearances for his national team.
