Explosion rocks Zimbabwe president's rally

Explosion At Zimbabwe Stadium Where President Mnangagwa Addressed Rally

"He is at the state house in Bulawayo", said spokesman George Charamba.

The president was in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe's second city, to campaign for his Zanu-PF party ahead of nationwide elections taking place on 30 July.

Home Affairs Minister Obert Mpofu confirmed the "unfortunate incident" adding: "There were some injuries but I am still to get full details but as you are aware this happened close to the (president)".

The forthcoming election in Zimbabwe is the latest turning point in what has proved the most tumultuous few months in nearly four decades of Zimbabwe's political history.

"We have no fatalities so far", said Parirenyatwa.

Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta also condemned the attack. "Political competition should not fracture Zimbabweans but should be a measure to deepen their democratic credentials", President Kenyatta said.

Mnangagwa blames his usual enemies for the explosion, which has been described as a possible "assassination attempt" by state media but he has vowed under his leadership, the ruling Zanu-PF is assured of victory in the scheduled July poll.

USA tariffs on Chinese imports escalate trade dispute
The United States now dominates those industries, but Chinese government support could make it hard for USA companies to compete. China's Commerce Ministry responded Friday by saying it would immediately impose penalties of "equal scale" on American goods.

While Bulawayo has always been a bastion of opposition to the ZANU-PF and it was Mnangagwa's first rally in the city, commentators suggest the attack could have been instigated by internal ructions within the ruling party. We don't want to see its repetition in any manner, shape or form.

Mnangagwa - Mugabe's onetime right-hand man who was known as the "Crocodile" for his ruthlessness - called Sunday for unity and peace.

The blast came just hours after a similar attack in Ethiopia, where a grenade explosion killed at least one person and injured scores just after the new, reformist prime minister addressed a huge rally in the capital.

President Mnangagwa visited the injured at hospitals where they were admitted. Our prayers go out to the injured and we hope no lives have be lost.

The Russian embassy said they shared Zimbabwe's vision for a peaceful election. Violence must have no place in our politics. "We want to express our sympathy and concern for all those who have been injured".

In the past, the President has himself openly joked about the attempts, including during his campaigning.
