Angry Crowd Protests After Chicago Police Fatally Shoot Man

Chicago police officer put on desk duty after fatal shooting sparks protests

Officers armed with batons traded punches with the protesters, local media reports said.

At some point during the confrontation, the unidentified man was shot, police said.

"They thought he appeared to be reaching for a weapon, which he did have a weapon on him, and the officers tragically shot him", Waller told reporters, adding that police recovered a semi-automatic weapon. Four officers have been placed on administrative duty, per police protocol.

The chaotic scene simmered for hours after the encounter, as dozens of people chanting "murderers" and "no justice, no peace" lingered in the neighborhood.

Immediately after the shooting, an angry crowd gathered and began jostling with police, who had cordoned off the area.

The city erupted in protest in 2015 after the release of a video showing white police officer Jason Van Dyke shooting black 17-year-old Laquan McDonald 16 times in 2014. "Who do you serve?" they shouted at officers as the protest continued into the night. A livestream of the protest ended about that time also. Issa reported that two officers shoved him to the ground and smacked his cellphone out of his hand. An officer returned fire, police said.

Four protesters were arrested Saturday, while three or four officers sustained minor injuries during the protests, according to officials. The police have claimed that the violence was in response to protestors throwing bottles and rocks, although as of yet there is no video footage to back this up.

"There were some members of the community who were upset, " Guglielmi told the newspaper. In a statement, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) said it is committed to a "thorough, objective and unbiased investigation and requests the public's patience and cooperation".

This article has been updated with a Chicago activist group and local newspaper identifying the victim.
