Sanctions to remain until North Korea 'final' denuclearisation: Mike Pompeo

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo meets with Kim Yong Chol second from right in Pyongyang on July 7

In South Korea, where President Moon Jae-in has emerged as a key facilitator of U.S. And, the promised remains have yet to be delivered.

At the same time the USA state department was forced to deny reports Mr Pompeo gave Kim Jong Un a CD of Elton John's Rocket Man - a playful reference to Donald Trump's nickname for the North Korean leader. He said his discussions had been productive and conducted in good faith, but he allowed that much more work needed to be done. He stressed that "there's still more work to be done" in other areas, much of which would be done by working groups that the two sides have set up to deal with specific issues.

In a statement carried by the North's official Korean Central News Agency, the foreign ministry said the outcome of Pompeo's talks with senior official Kim Yong-chol was "very concerning" because it has led to a "dangerous phase that might rattle our willingness for denuclearisation that had been firm".

In a statement issued by a North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman and carried by the Korean Central News Agency, North Korea lashed out at the USA for seeking "unilateral and forced denuclearisation" from Pyongyang.

The senator's comments come just one day after North Korea's official KCNA news agency released a statement from an unnamed foreign ministry spokesperson which said that "the attitude of the USA was indeed regrettable" during Pompeo's talks with Pyongyang.

"The US just came out with such unilateral and robber-like denuclearization demands as CVID, declaration and verification that go against the spirit of the North-US summit meeting", he added, calling the talks "really disappointing".

However, it said that it could not help but feel regret about the attitude and stance the USA had.

'Our expectations and hopes were so naive it could be called foolish'.

"The settlement of outstanding issues surrounding North Korea, including nuclear, missile and abduction, will be extremely important to Japan, and that will also be extremely important for regional peace and stability", Abe said at the outset of the talks.

Meanwhile, 13th seed Julia Goerges , Donna Vekic , Ekaterina Makarova , Camila Giorgi all progressed to the fourth round. Open runner-up meant she became the seventh casualty in the top 10 women's seeds before the middle weekend.

The spokesman also blasted the United States for "making great publicity" about the suspension of its joint military drills with South Korea, saying that it was hardly a concession because it was a "highly reversible step which can be resumed anytime, at any moment as all of its military force remains intact in its previously held positions without scrapping even a rifle".

North Korea says it is disappointed with the way the US has conducted itself in bilateral discussions, saying that the progress made at last month's historic summit in Singapore is in danger of being eroded. "The miracle could be yours; it can be your miracle in North Korea as well".

When asked about reports that North Korea is building up sites tied to its nuclear weapons program, Pompeo insisted that Kim Jong Un is "still committed" to complete denuclearization.

"The high-level talks this time brought us in a unsafe situation where we may be shaken in our unshakable will for denuclearisation, rather than consolidating trust between the DPRK and the USA".

"These are complicated issues but we made progress on nearly all of the central issues. We gotta give Pompeo that flexibility to continue these efforts, to push hard and see where we end up", he said.

'And when you want it bad, you get it bad.

But his attitude was apparently not shared by his North Korean counterparts.

"These are complicated issues but we made progress on nearly all the central issues".

And he said some progress had been made towards agreeing "the modalities" of North Korea's destruction of a missile facility.
