Trump fires off explosive threat to Iran's leader

The president said if Iran continued to "threaten" the United States, the country would face "consequences the likes of which few throughout history have ever suffered before".

Pompeo's speech on Sunday came as US President Donald Trump and his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani traded angry threats amid rising tensions between the two countries.

The U.S. administration is ratcheting up pressure on Tehran since Trump in May pulled the United States out of the 2015 nuclear deal and reimposed sanctions against Iran.

"Trump's statement threatening Iran is psychological warfare, and he is making a mistake if he wants to take steps against Iran", Gheybparvar said, according to a report by the semi-official Iranian Student's News Agency.

He said: "I spoke to the President over the last several days, and President Trump told me that if Iran does anything at all to the negative, they will pay a price like few countries have ever paid before". "Americans should know that peace with Iran is the mother of all peace", he added.

Some Iranians blamed the threat from Iran for causing the rial's collapse Monday, while others attributed the fall to Trump's tweet. "Every peace-loving person in the US needs to press the president to tone down his rhetoric and rethink this march to war".

Mara also noted that Trump also directed violent language toward North Korea - before meeting with Kim Jong Un in Singapore.

The tirade at the highest level signalled an immediate escalation of tensions between Washington and Tehran, weeks after the USA left a landmark deal signed in 2015 which curbed Iran's nuclear activities in return for the lifting of global sanctions.

He said the goal of the United States is to see Iranians inside their own country live the same kind of life Iranians in the United States enjoy.

It appears that Mr Trump's threat to Tehran was in response to a speech delivered by...

The context is the tussle over the future of Iran's oil exports.

He said despite poor treatment by their leaders, "the proud Iranian people are not staying silent about their governments many abuses", Pompeo said.

"Criticism of the corruption of the Iranian government is not only often times accurate but also something that a lot of Iranians would agree with", Parsi told Al Jazeera.

The top US diplomat said the United Sates is not afraid to pressure the Iranian government at its highest level as he urged all USA allies to join in financially suppressing the government.

Pompeo talked about increasing the media outreach to the Iranian people.

"America is threatening the Iranian people with its sanctions and our government is doing the same with its incompetence and mismanagement", said the self-employed 35-year-old. We will resist pressure from enemies.

"And the United States under President Trump will not stay silent either".

Saying that one in four Iranians listen to or watch US government broadcasts, Pompeo announced that the organization overseeing the Voice of America is launching new Farsi-language channels across television, radio and the internet.
