Two rare shark attacks reported along New York's Fire Island beaches

Girl, boy bitten in water off Fire Island

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he has deployed Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos to lead a multi-agency investigation into the apparent shark attacks.

- A 12-year-old girl and a boy were bitten while in the ocean water off Fire Island.

A 13-year-old boy was bitten while on a boogie board at Atlantique beach and was treated at a hospital, according to Town of Islip spokeswoman Caroline Smith.

At Sailors Haven, a 12-year-old girl suffered bite marks "consistent with a large fish" while wading, said Elizabeth Rogers, a spokeswoman for Fire Island National Seashore, which runs the beach. "We were at the beach and there wasn't a tiger or anything", she said, laughing.

She says the water was so cold she didn't feel anything, but there's little doubt the creature that chomped on her leg was a shark. "I thought it was a shark". "My daughter was not even 10 feet off the shore up to her waist". Lola's father, Philip Pollina, said he could tell what he was seeing when he looked at her wound.

Rogers said the bite marks seen on the victim's leg were consistent with a large fish. Swimmers were allowed back into the water around 2:30 p.m. when the sighting was deemed to be a sandbar shark.

"We're seeing this as an opportunity to remind everyone that the water is handsome - it's magnificent here on the south shore of Long Island but treacherous".

Only about 10 cases of shark bites on people have ever been documented in NY state, the last one in 1948, Levine said, citing information he said was given by Islip town supervisors. Further west and a few hours after the two attacks, bathers were evacuated from the waters off Robert Moses State Park and Jones Beach after a lifeguard spotted a shark.
