U.K.'s senior official in charge of Brexit resigns

Britain's Secretary of State for Departing the EU David Davis arrives in Downing Street in London

However, furious pro-Brexit MPs criticised Brexiter cabinet ministers, including David Davis, Liam Fox and Andrea Leadsom, for failing to take a stronger stand against the government's proposed offer to the European Union, including quitting the cabinet.

Tweets from Sarah O'Grady, the wife of David Davis's chief of staff Stewart Jackson, suggested the veteran parliamentarian made the decision to walk away because he "couldn't sell out his own country".

Davis' resignation was also accompanied by the resignation of his deputy, Brexit minister Steve Baker, according to the Telegraph.

An analysis of the Chequers deal circulating within the pro-Brexit European Research Group of MPs was damning about the plan, saying it would lead to "a worst-of-all-worlds "black hole" Brexit where the United Kingdom is stuck permanently as a vassal state in the EU's legal and regulatory tar pit".

In a statement released last week, Theresa May said: "Today in detailed discussions the Cabinet has agreed our collective position for the future of our negotiations with the EU".

His unhappiness in government has been no secret for some time, but after the prime minister's Chequers agreement with cabinet ministers to pursue closer ties with the European Union than he desired, he found his position untenable.

The move threatens to plunge prime minister Theresa May's administration into chaos and has shattered the fragile peace that had been established after a meeting at Chequers on Friday had appeared to establish unity in the ruling Conservative party over the direction that the government would take on Brexit.

Writing in The Daily Telegraph, Mr Rees-Mogg said: "If the proposals are as they now appear, I will vote against them and others may well do the same".

May is due to brief lawmakers Monday on the plan hammered out during a 12-hour meeting at Chequers, the prime minister's country retreat.

Ellen Booth and Larry Booth told KRDO-TV in Colorado Springs that they lost their second home where they planned to retire. The fire , which covers land in Costilla and Huerfano counties, has shut down U.S. 160 between Fort Garland and La Veta.

The director-general of the CBI, Carolyn Fairbairn, said the resignation was "a blow", adding that business had welcomed the agreement of ministers on Friday.

"Outside of the EU, Britain will be nimbler, more open to innovation and technological change, at the same time as driving up global standards", he wrote.

"A very soft Brexit means that we haven't left, we are simply a rule-taker", he said.

But some senior pro-Brexit ministers have backed May's plan.

Nigel Farage congratulated Mr Davis for quitting and called for Mrs May to be replaced as prime minister, accusing her of being "duplicitous" and claiming her response "shows she is controlled by the civil service".

"Those of us who believe that we want to execute a proper Brexit, and one that is the best deal for Britain, have an opportunity now to get behind the prime minister in order to negotiate that deal", he said.

On Friday Mrs May faced down a revolt by up to seven Eurosceptic Cabinet ministers by daring her critics to walk away after the marathon talks.

"The PM's proposals for a Brexit in name only are not acceptable".
