6 children dead from adenovirus outbreak in New Jersey

Viral Outbreak at New Jersey Rehabilitation Center Leaves 6 Children Dead

It was not clear when the children died, and though the New Jersey Health Department declined to release their ages on Tuesday, it said that the 18 people stricken with the virus ranged from a toddler to a young adult and that most were under 18.

Six pediatric patients are dead and 12 others sick due to a "severe" viral outbreak at a facility in New Jersey, the Department of Health said in a statement Tuesday.

As its investigation continues, the Center has been instructed not to admit new patients. On Sunday, they said they found "minor hand washing deficiencies".

The children involved have "severely compromised immune systems" rendering them more susceptible to the virus, the health department said.

The various strains of adenovirus can cause a variety of illnesses, ranging from common colds to neurologic conditions, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Saudi calls, ‘body double’ after killing
Saudi authorities acknowledged on Saturday that Khashoggi was killed October 2 at the consulate under still-disputed circumstances.

"The Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation has recently experienced some cases of the Adenovirus in its pediatric unit".

The adenovirus typically causes mild illness, but the Health Department says the outbreak is severe because it's affecting kids with severely compromised immune systems. Adenovirus 7, the strain health officials said is behind the New Jersey outbreak, is commonly associated with respiratory diseases, though it's also been linked to fevers and conjunctivitis (pink eye), according to the CDC. Health officials are working with the centre on infection control issues.

State officials were first notified of respiratory illnesses at the center on October 9, officials said.

The center's administrator says its fully cooperating with county, state and federal agencies and has sought out their medical guidance with respect to the virus.

The facility's paediatrics centre serves newborns to 22-year-olds who are "medically fragile" and provides an individualized program for each child, the centre's website said.
