Climate change: Indonesia’s leadership is critical

A child walks past a misting fountain in the central Gwanghwamun area of Seoul on Aug 1 2018. The world has already warmed about 1 deg C since pre-industrial times fuelling stronger storms more extreme floods deadlier heatwaves and wildfires

Reaffirming the administration's commitment to withdrawing from the climate accord, the State Department said in a statement to the Times that its "acceptance of this report. does not imply endorsement by the United States of the specific findings or underlying contents of the report".

"Every extra bit of warming matters, especially since warming of 1.5 °C or higher increases the risk associated with long-lasting or irreversible changes, such as the loss of some ecosystems", said Hans-Otto Pörtner, Co-Chair of IPCC Working Group II.

Limiting global warming to 1.5C will cost the world $2.4 trillion every year for the next two decades, the United Nations report warns. But for almost every component of the climate system, the SR15 report shows that limiting the warming to 1.5°C will make our life and our children's life easier when it comes to mitigation and adaptation. "But doing so would require unprecedented changes". "There is no time to waste". It would mean a carbon-neutral world - one with no net additional greenhouse gases in the atmosphere - by 2050.

"The coming period is critical".

Annica Ekman, President of the EGU Atmospheric Sciences Division, noted: "If anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions continue at the same rate, we will most likely reach a warming of 1.5°C as early as 2030 and no later than 2052".

The WWF called on the European Union to take urgent action to limit global warming to 1.5ºC, saying in a press release: "Approved by 195 governments, the report underscores the small window of opportunity we have to make immediate, deep and transformational changes - without which the world we know will be irreversibly changed".

"The EU has been at the forefront of addressing the root causes of climate change and strengthening a concerted global response to it in the framework of the Paris Agreement", Cañete and Moedas said in a joint statement.

He added that as someone who had spent half of his life under Soviet rule, "I know what I am talking about". The Soviet Union was about prisons and gulags, borders and walls, violence against citizens and neighbours.

A new report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warns of food shortages, widespread wildfire and dying coral reefs by 2040 if drastic changes are not made.

"Climate change is already affecting people, eco systems and livelihoods all around the world", he says.

"Even the scientists were surprised to see how much science was already there and how much they could really differentiate and how great are the benefits of limiting global warming at 1.5 compared to 2", Thelma Krug, vice-chair of the IPCC, told Reuters in an interview. Coral reefs would decline by 70-90 percent with global warming of 1.5 °C, whereas virtually all ( 99 percent) would be lost with 2 °C.

Transportation: In order to meet the 1.5C goal, the IPCC envisages a future where people travel less, and that generally consumer preferences shift to more sustainable choices like vehicle sharing and hybrid and electric cars. "What we've done is said what the world needs to do", Imperial College London's Jim Skea, cochair of the IPCC panel, said at a press conference.

While there are steps to be taken they do need ambitious leaders who are willing to take "rapid and far-reaching" means in all aspects of society from land management, energy, industry, buildings, transport, and cities.

By signing the 2015 Paris Climate Change Agreement, India is committed to reducing its carbon emission intensity by 33-35 per cent by 2030 below 2005 levels, increase the share of non-fossil-based energy resources to 40 per cent of the installed electric capacity by 2030 and to create an additional carbon sink of 2.5-3 gigatonnes of CO2e - carbon dioxide equivalent - through additional forest and tree cover by 2030. Moreover, if global temperatures were to exceed the mark temporarily, then, additional carbon removal techniques would be required to return warming to below 1.5℃ by 2100.
