Federal Bureau of Investigation report looms as senators slam Trump for mocking Kavanaugh accuser

Late last week, the Senate Judiciary Committee heard from both Kavanaugh, and Christine Blasey Ford, who alleges Kavanaugh drunkenly pinned her down on a bed and groped her against her will at a high school gathering in 1982. With Republicans holding a thin 51-49 majority and five senators, including three Republicans, not committed to approving Kavanaugh, the conservative jurist's prospects of Senate confirmation remained murky.

Hundreds of U.S. law professors are signing an online letter addressed to the U.S. Senate claiming that President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh is disqualified from sitting on the nation's highest court.

Inside the Capitol, mounting political strains over the approaching election-season showdown were mirrored by growing anxieties over senators' security following frequent and at times aggressive demonstrations by anti-Kavanaugh protesters. Some lawmakers also complained of being confronted outside their homes.

Jeff Flake of Arizona to strike a deal to avoid holding a confirmation vote until after an FBI investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct against Kavanaugh, said on Tuesday that he was "concerned" about damage to key bipartisan relationships. Lisa Murkowski called them "wholly inappropriate".

Mr Flake said on USA television: "There's no time and no place for remarks like that, that discuss something this sensitive at a political rally". If all the Democrats in the Senate stick together, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell can afford to lose only one senator from his ranks and still confirm Trump's pick. Other Republicans conceded that Trump's insults could be damaging.

"We will not be intimidated by these people", McConnell said.

Sen. Roy Blunt of Missouri, the vice chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, told Business Insider that lawmakers understood the need to get over tense moments.

"I don't have any problem stating facts, no", Sanders said, snarking, "I know that is something that you probably do have a problem with". Until now, Trump has managed to maintain at least a semblance of decorum while discussing last week's hearing looking into the allegations made against his Supreme Court pick Brett Kavanaugh, but all that went out the window as he addressed a sea of his adoring fans.

"I had one beer!" he said, impersonating Ford.

White House counsellor Kellyanne Conway on Wednesday echoed the president's newly aggressive approach. She said Ford has "been treated like a Faberge egg by all of us, beginning with me and the president", and said Trump was merely "pointing out factual inconsistencies".

Two other people who Ms Ford said attended the same party have also been interviewed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Senators and aides have said that the file will contain forms of interviews conducted by the FBI - but not a conclusion from the bureau about who's telling the truth in the case. Background checks do not traditionally contain investigators' conclusions about who they believe is credible.

Perhaps that is a not-so-veiled shot at President Donald Trump, who ultimately gave the directive to reopen the FBI's background check on Kavanaugh.

But he said they are not following up at all on Ramirez's account that Kavanaugh thrust his genitals in her face, forcing her to touch them without her consent, during an alcohol-fuelled party when they were students at Yale University in the mid-1980s. "The President is very confident in his nominee, as he's stated time and time again, and we expect the Senate to vote, and we hope they do that soon". McConnell characterized those requests as part of an ongoing effort "to move the goal posts" on Kavanaugh's nomination by senators bent on delay.

According to a preliminary schedule, drafted with the expectation that the Senate will receive the report Wednesday evening, Republicans will read the first hour, starting at 8 a.m. Thursday, and Democrats will read the hour after that, according to a person who was briefed on the plan.
