Theresa May seeks to play down significance of Johnson’s arrival at conference

Senior Tories hit back at Johnson over his claims Brexit plans 'deranged'

He denied critics of the PM's Brexit strategy were destabilising the party, saying: "The Chequers plan is destabilising the party".

In a speech to his Conservative party conference in Birmingham, central England, Dominic Raab will repeat London's threat to walk away if it can not get a deal it wants.

A Lancaster House-style Brexit would be a "win-win" for both Britain and the EU, Mr Johnson said.

"So just in case anyone, anywhere, was in any doubt at all, let me say it loud and clear: The Conservative Party is, and always will be, the party of business".

He added: "The reality is there is one clear plan out there for how to deliver on the referendum that respects what people voted for and delivers for our economy in the United Kingdom - the Chequers plan that we agreed and set out in the white paper does exactly that and I'm confident that the Prime Minister, in Europe over the next month or so, will negotiate a deal which she can bring back to Parliament that will get the support of people across Parliament and deliver for the United Kingdom".

But he added: "I believe that when the Prime Minister lands this deal and brings it back, there will actually be a boost to the economy, as businesses start making those investments that they've deferred over the previous year or so, consumers start spending on big-ticket items as they feel more confident knowing where we are going in the future".

Mr Javid said European Union free movement would end under the plans.

"If we cheat the electorate - and Chequers is a cheat - we will escalate the sense of mistrust", Johnson said.

She told BBC One's The Andrew Marr Show: "I believe that the plan that we have put forward is a plan that is in the national interest".

In August, he was criticized for comparing Muslim women who wear face-covering veils to "letter boxes", and last month he compared May's Brexit plan to a "suicide vest".

New Tesla chairman must rein in CEO Elon Musk at key moment
The tweets had no basis in fact, and the ensuring market chaos hurt investors, the SEC said. He said his outlook for shares is now more positive than it was before the downgrade.

But Hammond said "Super Canada" proposal suggested by Johnson is "not on offer" from the European Union because it would create a hard border in Northern Ireland.

Other ministers chimed in, with Justice Minister David Gauke doubting Johnson's credentials for leadership.

He also namechecked Margaret Thatcher, the Conservative prime minister from 1979 to 1990 who remains a hero to many in the party, and said it was a disgrace that no banker had been jailed after the 2008 financial crash.

Michael Edwards from Hastings, a Tory member for 40 years, said Johnson gave an "inspiring speech". Before adding: "My fellow Conservatives, this is not democracy".

"Am I disappointed (that he didn't declare)?"

In a speech which delighted an audience at the Conservative Party conference, Mr Johnson called for no new taxes and extra health service spending.

While the main hall of the Conference has been at best half-full through for most of the time, there wasn't a free seat at Boris's so-called fringe meeting.

In a round of broadcast interviews on Monday, Mr Hammond was repeatedly asked whether Mr Johnson could ever become prime minister, and stated several times: "I don't believe that will happen".

"Surely to goodness we can take this Tony Benn tribute act and wallop it for six", he said, referring to the late Labour socialist cabinet minister.

"I think the whole country will be listening and the whole country will be saying here is a guy that was deeply involved in securing Brexit in the first place who is basically saying that Chequers is a constitutional outrage, and it is".
