Melbourne attack: Man arrested after fire and stabbings

Policemen block members of the public from walking towards the Bourke Street mall in central Melbourne Australia

Australian police shot a knife-wielding man who is believed to have stabbed three people in Melbourne's city-center Friday, killing one of them. One of the police officers had their weapon drawn.

The incident began with police getting reports of a vehicle that had burst into flames on the Bourke Street in Melbourne.

The man was arrested and taken to hospital in a critical condition, police said.

In more footage, a man is seen lunging at police before he is shot.

"A small number of people are being treated for stab wounds", the statement said.

A man was arrested at the scene and has been taken to hospital under police guard in a critical condition.

Clayton said police were not looking for any other suspects connected with the incident, and there was "no known link to terrorism at this stage".

The exact circumstances are yet to be determined at this stage. "The area has been cordoned off", police said.

Witness Fiona told 3AW her friends had seen someone with a knife in the area and she'd been told he'd stabbed a security guard.

Witnesses said the Holden Rodeo hit a pedestrian as it mounted the kerb and burst into flames outside Target near the Swanson Street intersection about 4.20pm on Friday.

Markel Villasin, 22, was finishing his shift at KFC on Bourke St as the drama unfolded.

Witnesses said they heard a big bang and images appeared to show a vehicle on fire.

The buildings surrounding the incident were put into lockdown, and police blocked off sections of Bourke and Swanston streets.

"I didn't know what was happening there was just so much chaos and screaming".

It was brought under control within about five minutes, a Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokeswoman said.

The police and State Premier Daniel Andrews asked people to avoid the area.

Neil McKeller, who works at Hylands Bookshop on Bourke Street, told Guardian Australia he heard a loud explosion and then gunshots.
