‘We are not robots’: Amazon workers protest in Europe on Black Friday

Работники Amazon устроили забастовки в черную пятницу

Britain-based trade union GMB organized the continent-wide protest under the protest slogan, "We are not robots".

"This #BlackFriday Amazon workers worldwide have come together with one message for billionaire Jeff Bezos", a UK Amazon worker tweeted. In a statement to FN, an Amazon spokesperson said: "We have fixed the issue and informed customers who may have been impacted". That facility employs 1,800 workers and was last on strike during Amazon Prime Day, another major shopping day for the company in May, according to UNI Global Union.

Amazon denies the numbers found in the report. But Amazon said its European fulfillment network is fully operational and reports to the contrary are "simply wrong".

The online retail giant claims that the online demonstration across Europe is not having any impact on its Black Friday sales.

"The conditions our members at Amazon are working under are frankly inhuman".

Organizers of the protests in the United Kingdom on Thursday stated that the goal of the strike is not to disrupt any of the businesses sales but to raise awareness of the poor conditions workers are living in.

GMB general secretary Tim Roache said: "We're standing up and saying enough is enough. People with kids, homes, bills to pay-they're not robots". These are people making Amazon its money.

Amazon responded with a statement to FN: "Amazon is a fair and responsible employer. That's what we're campaigning for".

"After a few months at the company, it becomes clear to most of us that management doesn't regard us a crucial contributors to its success", it read.

"We always work with public authorities, including the police, to ensure the safety of our people and our operations", the spokesperson said. "We have invested over 27 billion Euro and created over 75,000 permanent jobs across Europe since 2010".

Black Friday is considered to be the of the year for retailers.

More than 600 workers have gone on strike in Germany, where workers earn a starting salary of about $12 an hour, according to Reuters. Amazon has refuted claims of any mistreatment of employees stating that the Company has benefited Europe by providing 25,000 high paying jobs, with great benefits.

"We encourage everyone to compare our pay, benefits and working conditions to others and come see for yourself on one of the public tours we offer every day at our centres across the United Kingdom".
