Not just Khashoggi: 53 journalists killed worldwide in 2018, report says

US Included on List of Deadliest Countries for Journalists

In all, at least 53 died while doing risky work. The 34 journalists murdered this year compares with 18 murders in 2017.

The alleged Saudi hit team can be seen arriving in Turkey hours before the killing, entering the consulate and consular residence, and finally flying out of Turkey soon afterwards.

Afghanistan was perhaps predictably the world's deadliest country for journalists in 2018, when 15 were killed.

The number of journalists killed worldwide for their work almost doubled this year. Nearly all of these journalists are locals in their home countries who've been imprisoned by their own governments, the report indicates.

According to Reporters Without Borders (RSF) the top five most lethal countries in the world for journalists are Afghanistan, Syria, Mexico, Yemen and India. Four of those were journalists killed by a gunman in a June attack on the newspaper Capital Gazette in Maryland. Four of the six deaths listed stemmed from the Capital Gazette shooting (performed by a crazed lunatic who had a beef with the newspaper); the other two were killed while covering a storm in North Carolina.

The shooting, in which another newspaper employee was also killed, was the deadliest single attack on the media in recent USA history. It added that the same technology has made journalists less important to criminal groups who once needed the media to spread their message. Ten other journalists' deaths in 2018 were not included in the total, because they are still under investigation.

The Committee to Protect Journalists said the most illustrative case of a lack of worldwide leadership on journalists' rights and safety was "the brazen murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khaashoggi" at the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul by Saudi agents in October.

Parrot used Amazon Alexa to order items while his owner was away
A sneaky parrot nearly ran up a hefty Amazon bill after it began placing orders through its owner's Alexa device. After some time at NAWT, Rocco began to calm down and eventually won over Wischnewski, who decide to adopt him.

The RSF specially mentions: Jamal Khashoggi, who went missing inside the Consulate of Istanbul was considered murdered and the Slovak investigative reporter, Ján Kuciak, who was shot dead in his home and many others.

Video footage also shows Abdulaziz Mohammed al-Hawsawi, 31, a member of the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's security team, Anadolu news agency reported.

"The White House, traditionally a strong defender of global press freedom, has equivocated on the blame for Khashoggi's murder despite, according to the (Washington) Post, CIA conclusions that only the Crown Prince could have ordered such an operation", the report said. Yet the committee noted that he has called some "enemies of the people".

In this April 30, 2018 file photo, relatives, colleagues and friends of AFP chief photographer, Shah Marai, who was killed that day in a second suicide attack, carry his coffin in his village, Guldara, a district of Kabul province, Afghanistan.

In addition to the 34 murders, 11 journalists were killed in combat or crossfire, while another 8 died on other risky assignments like covering protests turned violent.

Time magazine last week recognized jailed and killed journalists as its "person of the year".

Journalists beware. United States has become one of the deadliest countries in the world for your profile. Afghanistan was the most risky country for journalists, with 15 killed including AFP's Shah Marai, followed by Syria with 11 deaths and Mexico with nine.
