President Donald Trump pays unannounced visit to U.S. troops in Iraq

US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump arrive to speak to members of the US military during an unannounced trip to Al Asad Air Base in Iraq

President Donald Trump greeted US troops at an armed forces base in Germany after making an unannounced visit to USA soldiers stationed in Iraq, his first presidential visit to service members in a troubled region.

They travelled there unannounced "late on Christmas night" to thank troops for "their service, their success and their sacrifice", it said.

In a surprise visit to United States troops, Trump on Wednesday landed at an airbase west of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, where he thanked the soldiers for their service.

The Syria withdrawal, which Trump announced in a tweet with little or no advance notice or consultation with the Cabinet, led to the abrupt resignation of Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis.

First Lady Melania Trump accompanied him on the surprise trip.

Trump's decision comes one week after pulling troops from Afghanistan and Syria.

He added: "While maintaining the USA presence in Iraq to prevent an ISIS resurgence and to protect United States interests, and also to always watch very closely over any potential reformation of ISIS and also to watch over Iran".

Trump, who speaks often about his support for the USA military, had faced criticism for not yet visiting US troops stationed in harm's way as he comes up on his two-year mark in office.

"I had concerns for the first lady - I will tell you".

You've had enough time.

Trump was looking for some positive headlines after days of turmoil over his decisions to withdraw all USA troops from Syria, pull out half of the 14,000-strong contingent in Afghanistan, and push out Defense Secretary James Mattis two months earlier than planned for criticizing his policies. It continues to experience sporadic bombings, kidnappings and assassinations, which most people attribute to IS. "In fact we could use this as the base if we wanted to do something in Syria", he said, without going into further detail, as reported by Reuters. Mattis had planned to leave at the end of February but Trump forced him to go on January 1 after his resignation letter.

"If we see something happening with ISIS that we don't like, we can hit them so fast and so hard they really won't know what the hell happened", Trump said, using an acronym for the militant group that he has said is defeated.

The Iraqi prime minister recently said Iraqi troops could deploy into Syria to protect Iraq from threats across its borders. The paper reported that the daughters of a podiatrist in NY who is now dead said their father had given Trump a bone-spur diagnosis as a favor to Fred Trump, who owned the building where the doctor had his office.

The president defended his decision to withdraw U.S. troops from neighbouring Syria, where some 2000 soldiers are deployed as part of an worldwide coalition fighting the Islamic State terrorist group, and he said that he was not giving USA generals any more extensions of the deployment to continue to degrade the IS and work out the logistics of leaving the Middle Eastern country.

Next month marks the president's third year in office and he is now the third president to visit Iraq, alongside Barack Obama and George W. Bush.
