Showing Brexit legal advice is in PM's interest, Crabb says

Prime Minister Theresa May is facing concerted calls to publish the government's legal advice on the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement

But he said it was better than the chaos of voting against it. The big season finale of the Game of Votes.

The position statement released on Monday also said the United Kingdom faces paying extra money to the European Union if the implementation period after the March departure date has to be extended. "If Theresa May fails to secure a majority on 11 December, the game opens up with a wide range of adverse outcomes".

In a BBC interview on Sunday, Mr Gove with colleagues not to make "the ideal the enemy of the good".

Facing a hostile Commons chamber, the Attorney General told MPs to "grow up and get real" as he insisted he could not release his legal advice on Brexit in full because it would be "contrary to the national interest".

"This would be a collision course between the government and Parliament", he told Sky News.

The backstop is intended as a temporary measure, but pro-Brexit lawmakers say it could leave Britain tied to the European Union indefinitely and unable to strike new trade deals around the world.

The government took legal advice from Attorney General Geoffrey Cox on its Brexit plan and was subsequently told by a vote of Parliament to make the document available to members of the house.

"That an humble Address be presented to Her Majesty, that she will be graciously pleased to give directions that the following papers be laid before Parliament: any legal advice in full, including that provided by the Attorney General, on the proposed withdrawal agreement on the terms of the UK's departure from the European Union including the Northern Ireland backstop and framework for a future relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union".

She said at a news conference that "passing this deal ... will take us to certainty for the future, and that failure to do that would only lead to uncertainty".

Last month, MPs passed a binding Commons vote which required the government to present any legal advice it had received "in full", something May has ruled out several times.

"In this case I am convinced that in order to disclose any advice that might have been given would be fundamentally contrary to the interests of this country", Mr Cox said.

Gyimah, who voted to remain in the European Union, said the deal was "not in the British national interest" and that voting for it would set Britain "up for failure".

This is an extraordinary development, but these proceedings will pale into insignificance next week should Mrs May lose the meaningful vote.

"I will still have a job in two weeks' time", May said in an interview with ITV television when asked if she would quit if she lost the vote.

Asked about how they would vote if there was an election 31% would back Labour, 28% would back the Conservatives and 9% would support the Lib Dems.

Gyimah, who backed remaining in the European Union during Britain's 2016 referendum, said the agreement was "a deal in name only".

Environment secretary Gove, said on Sunday that a second referendum "would undermine our democracy", and predicted that if it were held, people would vote to leave "in even greater numbers".
