US Market Indexes Continue Losses Thursday

Asian stocks sink for 2nd day after Wall Street slide

Fears over a partial government shutdown coupled with the fourth hike in interest rates this year sent stocks reeling in afternoon trading.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 464 points Thursday, bringing its losses to more than 1,700 points since Friday.

The broad-based S&P dropped 1.5 per cent to 2,506.87, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index sank 2.2 per cent to 6,635.48.

Stocks went into another slide Thursday in what is shaping up as the worst December on Wall Street since the depths of the Great Depression, with prices dragged down by rising fears of a recession somewhere on the horizon.

Several other key indexes in recent days have confirmed they were in bear markets, among which are the Russell 2000 small-cap index .RUT and the Dow Jones transportation average .DJT . The S&P 500 also dropped 1.79 percent, while the Nasdaq Composite slipped 1.63 percent to enter bear market territory.

The S&P 500 fell 50 points, or 2.1 percent, to 2,416. Barring huge gains during the upcoming holiday period, this will be the worst December for stocks since 1931.

The Nasdaq's fall reflects a sharp move by investors away from what had been the market's leaders - the so-called FAANG group of five favorite technology and internet stocks. The S&P 500 is on track for its first annual loss in a decade. The Dow is off 10 percent for December, and the Nasdaq is down more than 19 percent since August 29.

The increasing likelihood of a partial government shutdown injected further pessimism into USA stock markets.

World stock markets tumbled this week amid concern that the US Federal Reserve was raising interest rates too quickly.

Investors have responded to a weakening outlook for the US economy by selling stocks and buying ultra-safe USA government bonds. The Nasdaq fell 195 points, or 3 percent, to 6,332.

Scott Wren, senior global equity strategist at Wells Fargo Investment Institute, said that Fed Chairman Jerome Powell didn't appear concerned about the state of the US economy, despite deepening worries among investors that growth could slow even more in 2019 and 2020.

The Dow is down 1,240.91 points, or 5.1 percent.

Technology and communication services stocks bore the brunt of the sell-off, falling 3.0 percent and 3.1 percent, respectively. That's how it works, remember: When bond prices rise, yields fall.

Oil prices continued to retreat.

The Dow is down 1,859.62 points, or 7.5 percent. Benchmark U.S. crude fell 4.8 percent to $45.88 a barrel in NY, and it's dropped 40 percent since early October.
