Australia considers resettling Saudi teen escaping family

Teen Locks Herself in Room After Fleeing Allegedly Abusive Family

Instead, she was given back her passport and allowed to enter Thailand temporarily under the protection of the United Nations refugee agency, which was expected to take about five to seven days to study her case and her claim for asylum.

Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun, a Saudi woman who claims to be fleeing her country and family and is now in Bangkok, Thailand, is shown in this undated photo obtained by Reuters from social media.

Qunun, however, was stopped by Saudi and Kuwaiti immigration officials during transit at Bangkok International Airport. "I think this will be fair to both sides", he said.

She is staying in a Bangkok hotel while the UNHCR processes her application for refugee status, before she can seek asylum in a third country.

Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young, the first Australian MP to call for Australia to provide refuge to Ms al-Qunun, said it was "time to bring this courageous young woman to Australia to start her life as a free woman".

She was subsequently taken into the care of the UN's refugee agency in Thailand, and Australia's department of home affairs announced today that the UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agency, had referred her case to officials in Canberra.

Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun fled the ultra-conservative Saudi kingdom after she was allegedly subjected to physical and psychological abuse by her family.

The agency said in a statement that it required five days to process the girl's request.

She has also said she had a valid visa to enter Australia - where there is mounting pressure on the government to grant her asylum.

Qunun has said she believes she will be imprisoned or killed if sent back, and that her family is so strict they once locked her in a room for six months for cutting her hair.

Schumer said after the meeting that Trump threatened to keep the government shut down for " months or even years ". Rashida Tlaib of MI used some profanity when discussing her desire to see President Donald Trump impeached.

On Wednesday, the Australian Department of Home Affairs revealed that it will consider the 18-year-old's referral from the UN.

While Human Rights Watch deputy Asia director Phil Robertson has backed this statement, Abdullah al-Shuaibi, charge d'affaires at the Saudi embassy in Bangkok, denied this.

"Her time in Thailand is uncertain and while it's positive that she has access to UNHCR and her case is being reviewed, we know that the Thai authorities have kept other individuals and those who've sought asylum in reprimand, in detention, waiting for long periods of time to be granted asylum", she said. Like Alqunun, she had set her sights on Australia and reached out for help on social media.

Gen. Surachate Hakparn said that Alqunun's father and brother arrived together in Bangkok on Tuesday but Alqunun refused to meet them.

Saudi Arabia's embassy in Thailand on January 8 denied reports that Saudi Arabia had requested her extradition, according to Reuters.

Al-Qunun's plight unfolded on social media, drawing support from around the world, which convinced Thai authorities to back down from sending her back to Saudi Arabia.

Alqunun ran from this oppression, and her bravery means more people are speaking out against the terrifying Saudi regime.

"Due to privacy concerns, we can not comment on a specific case without signed consent", said Nancy Caron, a spokeswoman for Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

Video footage posted on Twitter by a Saudi human rights activist, meanwhile, appeared to show a Saudi official complaining that Thai authorities had to instead confiscate her smartphone.

Despite efforts by the Saudi government to curtail the scope of male guardianship laws, women who try to flee their families in Saudi Arabia have few good options inside the kingdom.
