Canada asks China clemency for convicted drug trafficker Robert Lloyd Schellenberg

This photograph taken and released by the Intermediate Peoples' Court of Dalian on January 14, 2019 shows Canadian Robert Lloyd Schellenberg (C) during his retrial on drug trafficking charges in the court in Dalian in China's northeast Liaoning province.

"It is of extreme concern to us as a government, as it should be to all our worldwide friends and allies, that China has chosen to arbitrarily apply [the] death penalty", he told reporters in Ottawa.

"We urge the Canadian side to respect the rule of law, respect China's legal sovereignty, correct its mistakes, and stop making irresponsible remarks", Hua said.

The Trudeau government is seeking clemency for a Canadian sentenced to death in China amid growing tensions between the two countries.

The sentence came during a clash between Ottawa and Beijing over Canada's arrest in December of Meng Wanzhou, chief financial officer of telecom giant Huawei, on a United States extradition request related to Iran sanctions violations.

In a move observers see as retaliation over the Huawei case, Chinese authorities detained two other Canadian citizens - a former diplomat and a business consultant - on suspicion of endangering national security.

Hua's comments are the latest sign of a sharply chilly turn in China-Canada relations since Canada detained a top Chinese telecommunications executive on December 1 at the request of the United States.

The lawyer for a Canadian man facing execution in China over drug smuggling has confirmed to the ABC his client will appeal his sentence.

"Exercise a high degree of caution in China due to the risk of arbitrary enforcement of local laws", it reads.

The foreign ministry's consular affairs office published a notice Tuesday saying that Canada has recently "arbitrarily detained" a Chinese national - a reference to Canada's arrest of Chinese executive Meng Wanzhou at the request of the United States.

After Comey firing, Federal Bureau of Investigation probed whether president was Russian agent
The deputy attorney general, Rod Rosenstein, appointed Mueller soon after Comey's firing in May 2017 to lead the investigation. Trump has also repeatedly and vociferously denied collusion with the Russians. "I acknowledge that", Giuliani said.

"We really understand how hard the situation is, and I think the Schellenberg family has our country's sympathy".

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying, speaking at a regular news briefing, expressed "strong dissatisfaction" with the comments.

The United States has denounced a death sentence imposed on a British Columbia man in China as "politically motivated", adding heft to Ottawa's effort to intensify global pressure on Beijing to spare his life and to release two other detained Canadians.

He was initially sentenced to 15 years in p‌ri‌s‌on, which Schellenberg appealed last month.

"They discussed the detention and legal treatment of Canadian citizens in China". The Chinese media began republicizing Schellenberg's case after Meng's detention.

"We have very clearly outlined the case's facts and its seriousness", she added.

Despite being sentenced to death, Mr Zhang said Schellenberg appeared "very peaceful and confident" about appealing the death sentence when they met on Tuesday.

Rights groups condemned the Schellenberg sentence while Guy St-Jacques, who was Canada's ambassador in Beijing when Kovrig worked there, expressed concern at how quickly the courts had acted.

Hua dismissed such concerns, saying the 222 kilograms (489 pounds) of methamphetamine that Schellenberg was accused of smuggling merited the harsh penalty.
