Graham "Depressed" Over Border Wall Stalemate, Seeks Compromise

A sign says the General Grant National Monument is closed due to the partial government shutdown in New York

As the longest government shutdown in history drags on, most Americans appear to blame President Donald Trump and the Republican party for the government being dormant. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a leading Democratic negotiator, insists that Trump reopen the government first. The partial shutdown began December 22.

If no progress is made, he said, then Trump should declare a national emergency as a way to get money to build his wall, a plan not popular with some fellow Republicans. "If we can't at the end of three weeks, all bets are off".

The increase in support is sharpest among Republicans, whose backing for Trump's long-standing campaign promise jumped 16 points in the past year, from 71 percent to 87 percent.

Meanwhile, Democrats remained resolute that Trump and Republican lawmakers should end the shutdown before rejoining the debate over how to best secure United States borders and reform immigration laws. "Just give in. He's not going to give in", Graham said.

According to a new CNN poll, 55 percent of those polled say that Trump is responsible for the shutdown while 32 percent blame Democrats, and nine percent blame both parties. That is identical to the end of the 16-day shutdown in 2013, when 29 percent blamed then-President Barack Obama and 53 percent put the responsibility on congressional Republicans. Such a move, should Mr Trump ultimately go down that route, would nearly certainly be challenged in the courts.

Sen. Joe Manchin III, D-W.Va., said in a statement Sunday that given Trump's suggestion late last week that he does not immediately plan to issue an emergency declaration, "it's time for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to bring up the House passed appropriations bills that would finally reopen government".

Trump has kept Washington on edge over whether he would resort to such a declaration, citing what he says is a "crisis" of drug smuggling and the trafficking of women and children at the border.

'Bold steps' needed on N Korea denuclearisation - Moon

Gingrich lamented the polarization that far trumps that of when he was House Speaker during former President Bill Clinton's administration. Pelosi also has shown no interest in accepting a wall - she has called it an "immorality" - in exchange for immigration fixes.

Mr Trump told Pirro he had not left the White House in months except for recent trips to Iraq and Germany and was "ready, willing and able to get a deal done".

So with President Trump waiting for a Supreme Court ruling and Democrats refusing to offer up any wall funding, it's pretty clear that neither side wants to actually address DACA anytime soon.

"Stop harming our country and our economy and let's make our best efforts because we all agree we need to invest more in border security", Coons said.

Of those 42 percent who support the wall, 24 percent say Trump should continue to demand the level of funding he has asked for, and 16 percent say he should strike a deal with the Democrats.

The New York Times said it was not clear if the investigation to determine whether Mr Trump was deliberately working for Russian Federation or had unintentionally been influenced by Moscow was still being pursued.

"Last we looked in one of the two funds there's about $1.2 billion of unobligated dollars", Cassidy said Saturday on Fox News.
