Huawei hit with criminal charges over tech 'theft'

Conservatives slam Liberals for handling of Meng Wanzhou case

The 13-count filing in Brooklyn against Huawei and its chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou accuses the company of committing bank and wire fraud to circumvent us sanctions against Iran that prohibit the export of goods and technologies originating from the U.S.

Another indictment against Huawei was unsealed in the Western District of Washington State, which charges the company and Huawei Device USA with 10 counts of illegal activity that amounts to corporate espionage.

Additionally, Huawei's chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, who was arrested in Canada in December at the USA government's request, was charged in what Whitaker described as criminal activity spanning more than a decade, going "all the way to the top of the company".

Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker announced criminal charges against Meng and other Huawei executives.

The U.S. reimposed sanctions against Iran in August 2018.

A Huawei spokesman did not immediately return phone messages seeking comment. She was detained in Vancouver at the beginning of December but was released on bail a week after her arrest.

At the heart of the case against Huawei is the claim that the company misled regulators about its business dealings with Iran, with Meng allegedly playing a key role in that effort.

Charges include bank and wire fraud, and conspiring to obstruct a grand jury.

It's claimed Meng, the daughter of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei, tried to cover up the Chinese tech giant's business operations in Iran.

"Huawei has misrepresented itself over the years", Whitaker said at a news conference that included US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, FBI director Christopher Wray.

These are law enforcement actions and are wholly separate from our trade negotiations with China.
The robot, which mimics human fingers, was developed by the phone carrier to test smartphones.

He said that he is concerned about Huawei devices in US telecommunications networks.

In a second set of charges, the Justice Department said the company had attempted to steal technology from the United States telecoms network T-Mobile. "Huawei employees reportedly told banking partners that Huawei had sold its ownership interest in SkyCom". Meng is charged with bank fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracies to commit bank and wire fraud.

The company, Hayes said, also allegedly had a bonus program to reward worldwide employees who would steal confidential information from competitors.

The charges were announced just before a crucial two-day round of trade talks between the United States and China are scheduled to begin in Washington.

The announcement came not only as tensions rise in the tariffs war between the United States and China but also as the U.S. has stepped up efforts to crack down on what it contends has been China's espionage activities to steal American technology.
