The Sunday Edition: President Donald Trump Tweetstorm

Trump signed a bill ensuring funding until February 15

A bipartisan, bicameral congressional committee has been charged with brokering an agreement on border security as part of a deal to keep the government open past February 15, and a stalemate could trigger another shutdown. Trump seemed girded for battle over the weekend, sending out a series of online messages that foreshadowed the upcoming fight with lawmakers.

Trump remains hopeful, tweeting Saturday that "only fools, or people with a political agenda" do not want a wall or steel barrier.

The acting chief of staff dismissed Pelosi's claims that the wall will cost too much.

The White House says Trump signed the measure after the Senate and House each passed it Friday.

"After 36 days of spirited debate and dialogue, I have seen and heard from enough Democrats and Republicans that they are willing to put partisanship aside, I think", Trump said.

Margaret Brennan, host of CBS' "Face The Nation," asked Mulvaney if and when both federal employees and government-contracted workers should expect to receive back pay for work they missed or continued to do without financial compensation during the 35-day shutdown.

After maintaining a more restrained profile during two years as House minority leader, Pelosi seized on the shutdown to return to the spotlight, repeatedly finding ways to rattle Trump, throw him off balance or get under his skin. Announcing the pact in a speech from the Rose Garden, Trump said he would start negotiations between the House and Senate over a full-year bill funding the Homeland Security Department, which oversees the border.

"I think what you've seen here is the president seeing an opportunity ..." Democrats say his focus on the wall distracts from more complex immigration problems and is used to whip up his base for political gain.

Trump postpones Speaker Pelosi's foreign trip over gov't shutdown
So here we are, 27 days into this shutdown, with 800,000 people losing wages and many, many more missing services they rely on. Ivanka Trump, who had been rumoured to be a contender for the position herself, will not be a candidate, Ditto said.

Acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney on Sunday said President Trump will ultimately secure the border and work to defend the nation with or without cooperation from Congress.

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross on Thursday said he didn't "quite understand" why some workers needed to rely on food pantries during the shutdown ― the longest such closure in USA history ― when they could just take out loans until the government reopens and they receive their back pay. "He does take this very seriously".

Senior legislators from both parties said the latest shutdown, the 19th since the mid-1970s, was as ineffective as previous ones but much more disruptive as it was the longest in United States history. But drawing attention to the bill could boost Democrats, particularly freshmen members up for re-election in districts Trump won in 2016.

Jeffries said that Democrats are willing to invest in additional infrastructure, especially at legal ports of entry where the majority of drugs come into the country.

Trump was initially scheduled to give his address on January 29, before House Speaker Nancy Pelosi last week rescinded his invitation to speak at the US House of Representatives.

The Trump administration is on the defensive this week after some conservative commentators - like Ann Coulter - said the president has capitulated again to Democrats.

Republican Senator Roy Blunt of Missouri said on Fox that he thinks Trump has learned from the shutdown that affected 800,000 federal workers and contributed to a drop in the president's approval rating in some polls. "We're still in the middle of negotiations".

"The president went from talking about a wall along the entire southern border at one point during the campaign ... to let's have barriers where they work and let's have something else where barriers wouldn't work as well", Blunt said.
