Theresa May warns of catastrophe if lawmakers don’t back her Brexit deal

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn indicated his party would table a no-confidence vote in the government within days of May's deal being defeated in Parliament on Tuesday.

Theresa May has warned of a "catastrophic and unforgivable breach of trust" in democracy if MPs reject her Brexit deal and the United Kingdom remains in the European Union.

Writing in the Sunday Express ahead of a critical vote this week, May urged lawmakers to "do what is right for the country", because she said rejecting the will of the people would be "a catastrophic and unforgivable breach of trust in our democracy".

"The country does have a right to know what members of parliament are for, not just what they are against, and it's important that the house comes to a view as to what it can back", Barclay said.

On Friday, her foreign minister Jeremy Hunt said Brexit might not happen at all if May's deal was defeated.

The Sunday Times reported that senior MPs intend to try to change the rules of the House of Commons so they can wrest control of the legislative agenda from the Government.

In a speech on Monday, May will warn there's now more chance of members of Parliament blocking Brexit than of the no-deal outcome preferred by many euroskeptic Tories who want a clean break from the EU.

"Time is simply running out, and we're at a stage where Brexit can probably only happen in late March now in the unlikely event that parliament approves May's deal on 15 January, or if parliament supports leaving without a deal". Political insiders, such as those at the BBC, say that around 100 Conservative MPs and the 10 Democratic Unionist Party MPs, are expected to join the opposition party Labour and others opposition parties in voting against the deal.

The opposition Labour Party, which favours remaining in a permanent customs union with the EU, has suggested it will seek a no-confidence vote in the government if MPs throw out the plan. The city in central England, 135 miles (217 kilometers) north of Parliament in London and once the heart of the global pottery industry, voted more emphatically to leave the European Union than anywhere else in the U.K.in the 2016 referendum.

Under the Fixed-term Parliaments Act, Labour can call a no-confidence motion which would most likely prompt a general election if May lost it.

But officials said Brussels would be in listening mode, and take guidance from the prime minister as to the next steps should she suffer a heavy defeat as is widely expected.

The Prime Minister will attempt to link any defeat of the bill to anti-Brexit MPs, saying "there are some in Westminster who would wish to delay or even stop Brexit and who will use every device available to them to do so".

Those opposed to the clause argue it could tie the United Kingdom into the EU's orbit indefinitely.

Danielle Haralambous, a United Kingdom analyst at the EIU, said: "Time is simply running out, and we're at a stage where Brexit can probably only happen in late March now in the unlikely event that parliament approves Mrs May's deal on 15 January, or if parliament supports leaving without a deal".

The BBC estimates that May's deal is likely to be supported by about 240 MPs, far short of the number needed for passage.
