Trump says Democratic Party has been 'hijacked'

The U.S. Capitol is seen as a Jogger

On Wednesday morning, the standoff over the shutdown reached a new level as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) sent a letter to President Donald Trump advising him to either postpone the annual State of the Union address, now scheduled for January 29, or to submit it in writing.

Democratic leaders did not ask the Secret Service if the agency would be able to secure the State of the Union event before sending the letter, according to a senior Homeland Security official, who was not authorized to speak publicly. Some have mentioned that tactic as a way of letting vulnerable GOP senators demonstrate they want to end the shutdown, but many Republicans have no desire to defy Trump and risk retribution from the president's loyal legion of voters. She added that unless the government reopens this week, they should find another date or Trump should deliver the address in writing. Asked whether she'd allow the speech to go forward January 29 if Trump insists on delivering it, Pelosi replied, "We'll cross that bridge when we come to it".

One, Rep. Lou Correa (D) of California, "welcomes the opportunity to talk with the President about border security", his spokesman said, "as soon as the government is reopened".

White House adviser Stephen Miller and other White House speechwriters have been working on the President's State of the Union address for weeks.

Both chambers are now planning to stay in session over the planned Martin Luther King Day recess next week, given the awful optics of skipping town amid the shutdown. The House and the Senate have to pass resolutions to actually green light the State of the Union. Rand Paul said they discussed the shutdown but the president did not offer any reaction to Pelosi's suggestion to put off the speech.

The measure follows last week's introduction of a bill that would protect furloughed federal workers from landlords and creditors filing legal action against them for failing to pay their bills during the shutdown, reported the Huffington Post. Just 43 per cent approve the way Democratic congressional leaders are handling the government shutdown, while 36 per cent each approve how Donald Trump and Republican congressional leaders are handling the shutdown. Pelosi is "censoring this vital message for transparent political purposes", he said.

It's the first group of rank-and-file Democrats to meet with Trump during the shutdown, which stretched into its 26th day Wednesday. They are people who heard President Trump say he would be "proud" to shut down the government.

In exchange for a three-week reopening of the government, the senators promise to commit that time to make "our best efforts following regular order in the appropriate committees and mark up bipartisan legislation relating to your request".

"The president - who is not well-known for flexibility - has been more flexible than the other side", said Sen.

The House has passed a Democratic measure to reopen the government through February 8 and provide $14 billion in emergency spending for recent hurricanes, wildfires and other natural disasters.
