Apple Revokes Google's Enterprise iOS Certificate, Disabling Internal Beta Apps Like Gmail

Facebook in trouble after 'paying teens to install spy app on their phones'

A Google website acts as a portal for program participants; a cute video explains how the program works; a Google support page even shows you how to install Google'e enterprise certificate onto an iOS device.

Apple has taken this disciplinary action following revelations that the company violated the terms of service of the Developer Enterprise Program by using it to distribute a "Facebook Research" VPN, allowing the company to monitor all data going in and out of a given device, independent of the app used to transmit data, giving the company unrestricted access to messages, emails, and browsing activity. Despite pulling their data-gathering app and apologizing, Google has now received the same treatment from Apple, as the latter has revoked the search engine's enterprise iOS certificate as well.

The news could be a further embarrassment for Facebook, which has been under heightened scrutiny over failing to crack down on manipulation of its platform and for sharing private data with its business partners.

The social network told TechCrunch that it planned to shut down the iOS version of the app just seven hours after the report broke online.

This operation, called "Project Atlas" in documents according to TechCrunch, paid users between ages 13 and 25 up to $20 per month in addition to referral fees to install the app.

Facebook did not immediately respond to a request for comment about internal difficulties caused by Apple's move.

This is not the first time Facebook has been accused of going to extreme lengths to get user data. The app will then send all of that information back to Facebook.

In a statement to Fast Company, Apple said that Facebook was in "clear breach of their agreement". TechCrunch's investigation found that starting in 2016, Facebook had been working with three app beta testing services to distribute Facebook Research: BetaBound, uTest and Applause.

In doing so, Apple closed off Facebook's efforts to sidestep Apple's app store and its tighter rules on privacy.

For now, the app appears to be available for Android phones, though not through Google's main app store. Both companies' apps offered rewards in exchange for users agreeing to share data from their apps and devices.

"The app was created to collect data that helps us understand how people use apps, not the content of the messages they send or receive", a spokeswoman told the BBC. Companies like Facebook use the enterprise program to build internal company apps, apps for communication, transportation and other logistics useful to employees. Facebook used the data to gain information on potential competitors.

"The Screenwise Meter iOS app should not have operated under Apple's developer enterprise programme - this was a mistake, and we apologise".

"In an earlier statement over Facebook's certificate removal, Apple did warn that 'any developer using their enterprise certificates to distribute apps to consumers will have their certificates revoked.' Apple is clearly sticking to its rules and applying them equally to Facebook, Google, and likely many other companies that get caught breaking Apple's rules in the future".
