Canada PM surprised minister quit cabinet over ethics accusations

Trudeau in ethics probe over handling of Libyan contract fraud

The Globe and Mail published a report that the Prime Minister's office attempted to put pressure on Wilson-Raybould to intervene in SNC Lavalin case.

Wilson-Raybould and then Health Minister Jane Philpott worked on the legislation together and released a joint statement after the bill passed the Senate. "I wasn't influenced. There was at no time a sense that the Prime Minister's Office, somebody on his staff, or anyone made me feel like I had to do something.' What we have is the circumstantial evidence that she was shuffled out, and clearly not happy about it".

Trudeau was elected promising that the relationship this country has with Indigenous people was, to him, of the utmost importance.

All he kept repeating - from the script given to him - was that government did its job, government is committed to upholding the integrity of the justice system and that Wilson-Raybould should have done her job last fall if she thought something was amiss.

The PM allegedly pressured former justice minister and attorney general Jody Wilson-Raybould to curtail the criminal prosecution of a multi-million-dollar corruption and fraud case against SNC-Lavalin, redirecting the matter out of the courts and into a "remediation agreement", which would have spared the company the negative financial and reputational consequences of a criminal trial - the most devastating of which would include a 10-year ban from accepting government contracts, a stipulation which would economically cripple the Montreal engineering firm. However, the law contemplates the possibility of prosecutors being directed by the attorney-general to defer a prosecution.

He also said that, at that time, "I told her directly that any decisions on matters involving the director of public prosecutions were hers alone".

During a high-level speech in B.C.to an audience including the province's premier, the provincial cabinet and Indigenous leaders, Wilson-Raybould again showed her frustrations with the Liberal government's reconciliation efforts. Trudeau responded to this saying that he respects her right to do that and that he has full confidence in her that she did nothing wrong.

"In our system of government, of course, her presence in cabinet should actually speak for itself". Trudeau informed the rest of his cabinet Tuesday morning about her decision and named Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan to take over responsibility for the veterans-affairs portfolio.

Trudeau was shaky on Tuesday.

As for the idea that anything untoward happened, or that Ms. Wilson-Raybould was unhappy with the handling of the matter, or her own abrupt demotion from Justice to Veterans Affairs, Mr. Trudeau pointed to the fact that she was still on the front bench.

"She's done incredibly well on some very hard files", she said. In her resignation letter she alludes to the controversy and said she is looking to determine what she can and can't say about it. "Clearly, there is something more than he has been forthcoming with".

Trudeau also said this week his office is seeking legal advice on the particulars of solicitor-client privilege from David Lametti, who succeeded Wilson-Raybould as attorney general.

Her resignation provides stark contrast to Trudeau's characterization of the situation just a day earlier.

"The longer he refuses to do this, the more guilty he appears to Canadians". "And that's why I continue to be puzzled and disappointed by her decision to step down from cabinet".
