Venezuela opposition leader says family threatened by Maduro agents

Venezuela's self-declared interim leader Juan Guaido speaks to supporters in Caracas

Following the USA -led campaign against Venezuela's democratically elected President Nicolas Maduro, the European Parliament Thursday called on the EU member states to recognize Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido as the interim president.

The opposition leader said he had sent communications to both Russian Federation and China, Maduro's top foreign creditors and political supporters.

Even while denouncing the special police force, Guaido appealed to them and the military to abandon Maduro and abide by the constitution, which he contends instructs him as leader of the opposition-controlled National Assembly to take the presidency.

One former National Security Council official, Jose Cardenas, said Putin's support for Maduro seeks to "create instability, and distract and tax United States resources in the United States' own sphere of influence".

Guaido does not yet control any of the state's functions, which remain loyal to Maduro despite the opposition's calls for defections.

The United Nations is planning to hold talks in the coming days with Mexico and Uruguay, which have announced plans to hold a conference in Montevideo on February 7 on the political crisis in Venezuela.

Asked by CNN's Christiane Amanpour whether he would accept United States military support, he said through an interpreter: "Here in Venezuela we are doing everything we can to put pressure, so that we don't have to come to a scenario that no one would wish to have".

Shutdown costs pegged at $3 billion as United States government reopens
It remained to be seen how lawmakers address border security before the February 15 deadline while avoiding another closure. The CBO said the cost of the shutdown will make the US economy 0.02 percent smaller than expected in 2019.

In addition, Americans who work for non-US companies located outside the United States and Venezuela have until March 29 to conduct "certain maintenance or wind-down transactions", according to the notice dated January 31 and posted on the department's website overnight. He said they had with them two AK-47 rifles, two satellite phones and 500 bracelets bearing the symbol of Operation Consti-tution, a political group dedicated to toppling Maduro.

The military's top leadership is backing Maduro, though analysts warn that rank-and-file troops frustrated by their country's economic and humanitarian crisis may not share that unwavering loyalty.

But he added that the opposition will have to continue to apply pressure mechanisms until Maduro's "usurpation of power has ceased". Last week, street protests turned violent in days of unrest that killed almost three dozen people in clashes with government security forces.

Meanwhile, a prominent opposition lawmaker called on a group of European Union and Latin American countries to support Maduro's ouster - without negotiations.

Guaido has promised a transitional government and free elections to end the rule of the socialist Maduro regime, which has overseen the once-wealthy oil nation's descent into economic collapse and a humanitarian crisis. "We will stand firm", Guaido tweeted.

Guaido said there would be something for everyone in society to do as Venezuela moves forward, including the military.
