Pakistan hands captured fighter pilot back to India

As the nation waits for Abhinandan Varthaman, Bollywood celebs have been expressing their happiness on his arrival back in India.

Indian police say the three died overnight after a shell fired by Pakistani soldiers hit their home in Poonch region near the so-called Line of Control that divides the Himalayan territory of Kashmir between the two nuclear-armed rivals.

The pilot is being hailed as a hero in India, with fireworks being set off in the capital Delhi.

In his interview to BBC News, Qureshi repeated Prime Minister Khan's offer for dialogue and said that Pakistan was prepared to investigate Indian allegations if provided with actionable evidence.

Days after his release, Azhar held a rally for some 10,000 supporters in the Pakistani city of Karachi, and called for the destruction of India and the U.S.

"The Pakistan army looked after me really well, they are very professional", the pilot said while in uniform, adding that he saw potential for peace.

Islamabad launched its own incursion that ended in the capture of Indian pilot Abhinandan Varthaman.

The pilot was whisked away in a convoy by Indian officials away from the public glare.

Earlier in the day, the road on the Indian side of the border had been lined with well-wishers, but by the time Varthaman crossed around 9 p.m. majority had left.

Some were waving Indian flags, others had them painted on their cheeks.

Talking about the captured Indian pilot, he rejected the impression that there was any kind of pressure that could have forced Islamabad to release the detainee.

Rebel groups have been fighting Indian rule since 1989 and demand that Kashmir be united either under Pakistani rule or as an independent country.

But Indian officials could be sceptical - having raised these concerns before.

The latest escalation started when Indian warplanes struck suspected terrorist camps on the Pakistani side on Tuesday, in retaliation for a suicide bombing in India two weeks earlier.

In a separate interview to BBC News, the foreign minister, in response to a question pertaining to the Pulwama incident, said that there was "still confusion" over whether the Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) group had claimed responsibility for the attack or not. The next day, Pakistan retaliated with a large air formation, comprising 24 fighter jets, including F-16s. All but one were over Kashmir. Dressed in a blue blazer and gray dress trousers, he was greeted by Indian policemen and military personnel on the Indian side.

Despite the move, Indian and Pakistani soldiers have again targeted each other's posts and villages along their Line of Control (LoC) in disputed Kashmir, killing at least six civilians and two Pakistani troops, officials said Saturday.
