Second Canadian cabinet minister resigns over SNC-Lavalin scandal

Philpott was among Trudeau's most trusted cabinet ministers. She is the first Indigenous person to hold the post, which combines duties as a politician (heading the Department of Justice) and a legal official (overseeing prosecutions). Instead, they wanted her to order negotiation of a remediation agreement with the company that would have levied stiff financial penalties but removed the prospect of a criminal conviction that could cripple the company financially and hurt innocent employees, pensioners and suppliers. They were going promote women in public life.
Former NDP leader Tom Mulcair, now a prominent media commentator, has suggested that Trudeau erred in not publicly making a public case for SNC-Lavalin as a national asset worth preserving.
He has denied political meddling to shield engineering firm SNC-Lavalin from a bribery trial.
September 17 - Trudeau and Wilson-Raybould discuss the SNC-Lavalin file.
The most damning evidence put forward by Wilson-Raybould is from two text messages her chief of staff, Jessica Prince, sent to her following meetings she had with the PMO [Prime Minister's Office].
September 18 - SNC-Lavalin representatives meet with Privy Council clerk Michael Wernick, Canada's most senior public servant, and Finance Minister Bill Morneau to discuss issues including "justice and law enforcement".
The controversy surrounding corrupt dealings by SNC-Lavalin has received extensive coverage in the Quebec media since 2012. That challenge is ongoing.
As attorney general, Wilson-Raybould could legally have instructed the director of public prosecutions to negotiate one with SNC-Lavalin. That's the lowest close since March 2, 2016.
November 5 and 19 - SNC-Lavalin meets with Mathieu Bouchard, another senior adviser in the Prime Minister's Office, to discuss "justice and law enforcement".
This prompted her to ask the Prime Minister: "Are you politically interfering with my role as attorney general?"

Philpott notified her Twitter followers, "It grieves me to resign from a portfolio where I was at work to deliver an important mandate".

The Liberals say this is a first step in a cautious investigation, but the opposition calls it a coverup. The retort prompted Trudeau to backtrack, she said.

The loss of two female cabinet members means that Trudeau's famously gender-equal cabinet is at risk of losing its 50-50 male-female split.

In his letter Scheer alleges that Trudeau contravened Section 423.1 (1) of the Criminal Code "by conduct with the intent to provoke fear in the attorney general".
New Democrat Leader Jagmeet Singh reiterated his call for a public inquiry into the affair. All three express support for Trudeau.
