Market advocacy group says closing US-Mexico border would be devastating

Donald Trump Mexico Border Immigration

Honduran migrants take part in a caravan towards the United States in Chiquimula, Guatemala, on October 17, 2018.

As of Tuesday morning, a senior administration official said Trump had not made a decision on closing the border yet and that none is expected before Friday.

"Security is more important to me than trade", he told reporters in the Oval Office.

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen announced Monday she will be expanding the "Migrant Protection Protocols" program, more popularly known as "Remain in Mexico".

Trump, who has deployed some 4,700 United States troops to the border and boasted of turning it into a war zone, confided last week to Fox News' Sean Hannity that ordering troops to turn machine guns on the men, women and children seeking asylum would be "a very effective way of doing it", but "We can't do it".

The Kentucky Republican told reporters on Tuesday that he hopes Trump won't take that action.

"We are in a full-blown emergency".

Earlier, spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said Trump was not working on a "specific timeline" and he'd look at all options on the table.

Nielsen named longtime U.S. Border Patrol Sector Chief Manny Padilla as a crisis coordinator who will manage efforts within the department's different immigration agencies.

The goal is to try to change the incentive structure that is drawing Central Americans to make the trip in record numbers through Mexico and to the U.S. They too could start to disappear in the event of even a partial shutdown.

Avocado shortages, virgin margaritas - Border shutdown would hit American palates
Hundreds of officers who usually screen cargo and vehicles at ports of entry were reassigned to help manage migrants. President Donald Trump's threat to shut down the U.S. -Mexico border would hit American consumers - in the gut.

Liverpool Back On Top With Win Over Tottenham, Chelsea Defeat Cardiff City
Cardiff are five points from safety but have a game in hand at title-chasing City in midweek. Unsurprisingly, Neil Warnock was livid with the decisions.

There are over 40 U.S. -Mexico border crossings and more than 300 ports of entry, and experts predict their closure would affect more than $1.7 billion worth of commerce every day. By then, they have put down roots, disappeared into the shadows and ignored their deportation orders, analysts say. I think the president's right about that.

It's perhaps the most freakish move in two years of relentlessly erratic and freaky behavior by Trump, and he is indeed now threatening to flat-out close the southern border of the United States with Mexico.

"We gotta stay away from that rhetoric of closing the border". That's going to be it.

Key members of Congress waved aside his ultimatum.

He said 11,000 to 12,000 commercial trucks cross the border at Nogales daily, laden with about 50 million pounds of produce such as eggplants, tomatoes, bell peppers, lettuce, cucumbers and berries. "It would be a disaster for him and for the country".

Distributors say certain fruits and vegetables might not be available at all in arizona or may cost a lot more than what we're used to paying, if Trump shuts down the southern border.

That means that workers in auto assembly plants would be out of work, and workers in USA vehicle parts plants would follow, since with assembly plants shut down, parts plants would be idled, too. On the contrary, USA industries-especially agriculture but also construction, food service, and hospitality-are heavily dependent on Mexican and Central American labor.

With southern border facilities near a breaking point, US officials are busing many migrants hundreds of miles inland and dropping them off at bus stations and churches. A border closing would have a significant impact on trade between the two countries, and would also hit the almost 100 Fortune 500 companies that have factories in Juarez.

He said a closing of the border would lead to immediate layoffs and result in shortages and price increases at grocery stores and restaurants.
