Tories horrified by Theresa May's Brexit pact with Opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn

In a speech in Downing Street yesterday evening after a mammoth Cabinet meeting, the Prime Minister said she that she now plans to ask the European Union for a further extension to delay Brexit for a second time.

Mrs May said she believed that Britain "could make a success of no-deal in the long term", but added: "Leaving with a deal is the best solution".

Finance minister Philip Hammond said it was an "expectation" that Brussels would offer a longer extension, but London would want to curtail it as quickly as possible after passing a Brexit deal.

If the European Council proposes a different extension, Mrs May would be required to return to the Commons to obtain MPs' approval, but if they say no, there would be no time to renegotiate the date with Brussels, Downing Street said.

The bill, which would require May to bring a motion to delay the date of Brexit, now needs to be approved by the upper house, the House of Lords.

Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn's teams will meet for more "technical" talks on Thursday after two hours of what the Labour leader described as "inconclusive" talks between the two leaders failed to create a breakthrough.

"I said: 'Look, this is a policy of our party that we would want to pursue the option of a public vote to prevent crashing out or prevent leaving on a bad deal, '" he said.

The UK has until 12 April to propose a plan to the European Union - which must be accepted by the bloc - or it will leave without a deal on that date.

He said individuals with a public platform had a responsibility to speak in a way "that is temperate and is not in any way going to inflame people's views".

Two ministers resigned from May's government in protest at her efforts to seek a compromise with the opposition leader, Jeremy Corbyn.

Her plan is to seek acceptance for the legally binding arrangement - which puts out in detail the conditions of Britain's departure from the European Union - following securing cross-party political support to get a vision of future ties between the United Kingdom along with the bloc.

"And we must prevent the calamity of a Corbyn government", he said in his resignation letter.

Last July, when asked if he could guarantee there would be no Irish backstop in a Labour-negotiated Brexit deal, Mr Corbyn told Euronews: "There certainly wouldn't be a backstop from which you can't escape".

Mr Corbyn said: "We will meet the Prime Minister".

British officials hope to agree on a Brexit plan that can be presented to European Union officials ahead of an April 10 summit that will determine if the scheduled exit date can be delayed.

Signs of this were clear on Wednesday evening when a series of government amendments were defeated heavily in the House of Commons after Conservative MPs rebelled against the party whip. May and her ministers "have signalled" that they are so opposed to a default, no-deal Brexit on 12 April that they "will begin a process that could blow up the Tory Party".

After previously opposing parliament's attempts to find a majority for an alternative plan, May hinted Tuesday that she would now be willing to work with MPs.

They warned: "A second referendum would be exploited by the far right, damage the trust of many core Labour voters and reduce our chances of winning a general election".

In an interview with Sky News, Mark Carney, the governor of the Bank of England, said the risk of a no deal Brexit was now alarmingly high.

Shadow Brexit secretary Sir Keir Starmer confirmed the idea of a confirmatory referendum would be discussed in the second round of talks.

"We can not avoid failure for them", Macron said before a meeting in Paris with Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar.
