Israel Signals Cease-Fire with Gaza After Weekend of Horror

Netanyahu Orders 'Massive Strikes' Against Hamas in Gaza

The weekend has been described as the heaviest combat in the region since the 2014 Israeli assault on Gaza.

Israel and Hamas are bitter enemies and have fought three wars and numerous smaller battles since the Islamic militant group seized Gaza in 2007.

The first reports of a possible ceasefire mediated by Egypt and the United Nations came out shortly before midnight which was supposed to take effect immediately.

A recent two-day outbreak of violence killed 25 people in Gaza, both militants and civilians, and four civilians in Israel, AP reported.

President Donald Trump also took to Twitter to comment on the attacks, saying the USA stands with Israel. Egypt, which has been brokering efforts to reach a longer-term truce, has been opening its land border with Gaza more frequently.

At least 23 Palestinians, including at least nine militants, were killed.

Palestinian emergency personnel try to put out the fire on a auto belonging to Hamas terror group senior member Hamed Hamdan al-Khodari, after it was hit by an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City, on May 5, 2019.

Egyptian negotiators are now obliged to accept Islamic Jihad as as equal partner, represented not only by its leader Ziad Nahala, but also by its field commander Bahu Abu al-Ata, who now also has a seat at the table.

Israeli military said the airstrikes in Gaza were in retaliation for rocket fire in southen Israel.

A military statement said that Hamed Ahmed Abed Khudri had been responsible for transferring funds from Iran to armed factions in Gaza.

Meanwhile, Monday sees the first day of Ramadan, and Palestinians also commemorate Nakba Day this week, remembering the killings and displacement during the creation of Israel.

Israel denies responsibility for their deaths, and says a Hamas explosive killed them.

A Palestinian youth searches for his belongings under the rubble of a building that was destroyed by Israeli air strikes, in Gaza City, May 6, 2019.

Gaza's health ministry said the dead from the Israeli strikes included a 14-month-old baby and a pregnant woman, 37.

The distinction is that Israel's deadly response to the alleged Hamas hacking attempt occurred practically in real time.

The army said a Kornet missile had hit a vehicle and killed an Israeli civilian.

In the northern Gaza Strip, residents searched for a man and his wife missing among the rubble of an apartment building.

In November, the Gulf state, which is a longtime Hamas ally, committed to providing around $15 million a month in aid to Gaza over six months.
